History Event

The Great Ocean Road Running Festival has a long history of endurance and community. Originally a hardcore runner’s only race, the event has grown into a beautiful running event for everyone. Over the years it has added activities to make it more inclusive – walking events, shorter runs and charity fundraisers.
A big part of the festival is giving back to the community. We partner with organisations like Cure Cancer and raise vital funds for cancer research and awareness around health issues, including breast cancer deaths. This gives the event more meaning than just a race – it’s a way to make a positive impact.
The festival also celebrates the Great Ocean Road’s natural beauty. As an area of great historical and cultural significance, the race showcases the coastline and scenery while promoting environmental awareness.

The festival is in May so you can enjoy the mild and pleasant autumn weather in Victoria. The cooler temperatures are perfect for long distance running and the timing coincides with the best of the Great Ocean Road’s seasonal colours. Get there early to soak up the festival atmosphere, explore the local attractions and get ready for the weekend.

Running Festival Venue

The race location is along several iconic spots of the Great Ocean Road, including Apollo Bay, Lorne and Kennett River. Each section of the festival’s course has its own challenges and views, it’s an immersive experience.
Main start points are the Lorne Lower Car Park, Powercor Lorne Pier and the Kennett River Holiday Park. These hubs have facilities and are close to the start lines. For participant’s safety road closures are in place along the course, the road closure times will be communicated by the event. Traffic controllers will be on hand to manage traffic and provide emergency access as needed.

Ultra (60km)

For the serious endurance runner the Ultra is the ultimate test of endurance and toughness. 60km of undulating terrain takes you through stunning coastal scenery, requires focus and guts.

Marathon (44km)

The Marathon is 44km, slightly shorter but just as tough. Stretches of ocean and forested trails, perfect for the experienced runner looking for a scenic and rewarding marathon.

Half Marathon (23km)

The Half Marathon, starting at Kennett River Holiday Park, is a great option for those who want a balance of challenge and fun. 23km of stunning views and a taste of the festival without the physical demands of a full marathon.

14km and 6km Runs

These shorter runs are for casual runners or walkers. Both events allow you to enjoy the coastal scenery and be part of the festival without the pressure of longer distances.

Kids’ Gallop (1.5km)

The Kids’ Gallop is a fun event for young runners to get active. Non competitive and all about participation and fun, it’s an opportunity for kids to run with their families.
