How Wayoutback Australian Safaris Came to Be

Don Wait Wayoutback Australian SafarisWayoutback started from humble beginnings (maxed out credit cards and a couple of Toyota Troop Carriers) in early 1999 in Alice Springs with tours to Uluru (Ayers Rock). Founded by Don Wait, Wayoutback Desert Safaris was born from his love of Australia’s Red Centre and, more importantly, that unique feeling you get when you're really out there and that fantastic feeling of solitude and timelessness descends upon you.

In 2012, Wayoutback expanded into the Top End of the Northern Territory and along with it, Wayoutback Australian Safaris was born. After many years of operating in the Red Centre, it was time to spread our wings and take our passion for the Red Centre into the Top End, creating a truly specialised Northern Territory Tour Operator.

Our original 3 and 5 day 4WD Red Centre tours still operate to this day under our Classic 4WD banner and we now operate 3, 4 and 5 day Classic 4WD Safaris in both the Top End and Red Centre. We stepped it up and added to our existing remote campsites with comfortable permanent tents with beds, lighting, new improved menus and all the extras such as towels and linen whilst still offering guests the chance to roll out the swag and sleep around the campfire.

At the same time we recognised a need for tours offering a true outback experience in terms of authenticity, small groups and cultural interaction, but something for those wanting some creature comforts such as hotel and lodge style accommodation rather than a tent. Hence our Comfort Experience tours were introduced.

The introduction of our Budget Adventure tours were specifically designed to suit the young and fun. Typically for working holiday makers and students, these safaris are for those looking to get into the outback with like-minded travellers and are not recommended for families and children. You won’t find campsites with permanent tents on these tours and the bells and whistles have been stripped back, but as their name implies you will find a good value tour, packed with adventure and fun at a budget price.

After 18 years Don is still at the helm as Managing Director and shareholder, his passion for the Northern Territory undiminished. However, to help finance Wayoutback's growth and expertise, additional partners have been brought on board to add value in areas such as International and Domestic marketing as well as finance. Wayoutback Australian Safaris continues to constantly strive to improve our offerings based on our ethos of a few fundamental characteristics we believe are paramount to getting a really authentic taste of the outback as an adventure traveller.

  • Bush camping
  • Cooking food over a campfire
  • Sleeping under the stars in swags (Aussie bush bed)
  • 4 wheel driving on outback bush tracks
  • Keeping away from the crowds as much as possible
  • Providing authentic Aboriginal interaction
  • Employing and training guides that are, or become, the best in the business.

Happy travels!
