All Kinds of Racing in Alice

Alice Springs has a number of festivals and events each year that add to the diverse cultural flavour of the town. There is the Camel Cup, the Henley-on-Todd Regatta and The Finke Desert Race, the richest event of its kind in the southern hemisphere. With a large American population associated with Pine Gap, major American festivals are celebrated such as Halloween, Thanksgiving and Independence Day.

The Henley-on-Todd is run on the usually dry Todd River whereby participants literally run their home made craft through the hot river bed. This would have to be the only race of its kind in the world whereby a race gets cancelled because of water actually flowing in the river as happened in 1993.

The Finke Desert Race is now a major event and is a gruelling 460km multi terrain race starting in Alice Springs and finishing near the community of Aputula on the Finke River near the South Australian and Northern Territory border, east of the Stuart Highway. It is open to motorbikes and a number of categories for 4 wheeled machines.
