Tasmania is a large island just off the southeast coast of the Australian Continent and is part of the Commonwealth of Australia. It is an exotic land, filled with its own unique flora and fauna.While Tasmania has been inhabited for tens of thousands of years, the first Europeans visited the island in the late 18th Century.
The first colony was established in the early 1800s, consisting of British convicts and their military guards. Tasmania was a British colony until it federated with the rest of Australia when the commonwealth was established in 1901.
