Any conversation about Whitsunday Island has to begin with its magnificent beaches. Chief among them is Whitehaven Beach, which was named the world’s most eco-friendly beach by CNN.com in 2010 and placed fifth worldwide in TripAdvisor’s Travellers' Choice Beaches Awards in 2013. On 4.3 km along the shore, you can truly relax and close your eyes or marvel at the stunning array of colors created by the pure-white sand and the blue water.
Adventure Opportunities Abound
But on this island, the beaches are more than just your perfect way of sunbathing and dipping your toes into tropical water. Whitsunday Island lies at the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, and snorkeling opportunities abound. Dive in to discover a world beyond the sea level, an aquatic wonderland that World Heritage named one of the Seven Wonders of the World and which includes the world’s largest coral reef ecosystem. Or take a helicopter tour or boat ride to one of the adjoining islands, which offer more magnificent beaches and snorkeling opportunities.
Waking Up Along the Shore
But if you have more than one day to spare, here’s our recommendation: Take an overnight sailboat trip out to the coast. Waking up with the sun spreading its first light across the beautiful tropical island will be an experience you’ll never forget.
